Keep Your Car Safe In a Heatwave

Most of the UK is under an Amber warning for extreme heat this Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July, with central England being under an even more extreme red warning.

This is the first time that the Met Office has issued a red warning for exceptional heat and the public are being warned to take additional precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.

Motorists are being advised to be well prepared for any journeys being taken in the next few days. Planning ahead is particularly important for long journeys or journeys that have the potential for travel disruption.

The RAC has estimated that during the red heat warning, the number of drivers needing roadside assistance will be 15-20% higher than normal for mid-July, an equivalent of over 100 extra breakdowns a day.

For the drivers and passengers, the advice is to carry plenty of water to avoid de-hydration. Freezing it before the journey and storing it in a cool, shady place like under the seat will keep it cooler for longer. Carrying some non-perishable food and emergency medication is also advised in case of a breakdown. Sun protection, hats, umbrellas and a fully charged phone are also recommended.

Before a journey, there are important checks to do on your vehicle to avoid breaking down:

1. Check the coolant and oil levels when the engine is cold

2. Check tyre pressures and look for cuts or wear

3. Make sure you have enough fuel for your journey

Air conditioning can increase your fuel usage by as much as 10%. A lot of the energy requirements of the air con unit are at the beginning of your journey – once your car has reached the desired temperature, maintaining it is a lot more fuel efficient.
