UK Law for Commercial Vehicles
For standard commercial fleets not carrying dangerous goods, fitting a fire extinguisher is not a specific road traffic law. However, workplace safety laws influence whether to keep one on your vehicle.
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, an employer considers a company vehicle a “workplace”. Employers must conduct a risk assessment for the safety of drivers and operators. If the assessment identifies a fire risk, the business must provide an extinguisher and train staff to use it. Industry bodies recommend carrying at least one 2kg ABC dry powder extinguisher secured via a transport bracket in the driver’s cab.
On the other hand, vehicles carrying dangerous goods must comply with the strict Carriage of Dangerous Goods (CDG) and ADR regulations. These rules dictate the minimum total capacity of ABC dry powder extinguishers required based on the vehicle’s gross weight. Passenger Service Vehicles must also legally carry at least one portable fire extinguisher. This includes buses, coaches and minibuses.
Does PGA014 meet Requirements for Fire Cabinets?
If you mount large fire extinguishers (such as 6kg or 9kg units) to the exterior of an HGV or ADR hazardous goods vehicle, you must comply with strict ADR framework guidelines:
- ADR Section 8.1.4.5 states that the weather must not affect the operational safety of the extinguishers. To meet this, operators use heavy-duty, sealed vehicle cabinets.
- Extinguishers cannot roll or bounce around. Instead, they must be strapped down inside the cabinet to lock them in place.
- Drivers must be able to immediately access the fire extinguisher when required. Lockable cabinets must be able to be easily opened in an emergency.
