Side Marker Regulations
In the UK, the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (RVLR) dictate side marker lamp requirements to ensure large commercial vehicles remain highly visible. Under these rules, side marker lights are mandatory on all goods vehicles and trailers exceeding 6 metres in length. The regulations require that these lamps emit an amber light. However, there is a single exception: a light positioned within 1 metre of the extreme rear of the vehicle may be red.
Installers must distribute the lights evenly down the flanks of the vehicle. You must maintain a maximum distance of 3 metres between adjacent lamps. Additionally, mount them at a height between 0.25 and 1.5 metres above the road surface. Certain structural designs allow you to use an absolute maximum height of 2.1 metres. Finally, all fitted lamps must carry a valid E-mark to verify full legislative compliance.
