IVA Regulation Changes - Flashing Side Indicators

Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) is a national approval scheme for vehicles and trailers that are assembled or manufactured in small numbers.  The inspection looks at the way the vehicle is constructed to see if it complies with the current standards as described by European legislation. These requirements are constantly updated to ensure that the vehicle has been constructed to modern safety and environmental standards. This is different to an MOT, which examines the roadworthiness of a vehicle.

The Government regularly updates the Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) inspection manual, which is available to download on the UK Government website. Bodybuilders must build or modify their vehicles with these regulations in mind.

Recently, new ECE regulations have been released concerning side marker lights on long vehicles. These are covered in ECE Regulation No 48, revision 12. Section 6.5.3.1 covers the requirement for marker lights on the side of vehicles. Bodybuilders need to immediately update their specifications for new vehicles to incorporate these changes, or risk failing their IVA inspection.

It has been reported that some vehicles are not yet compliant with the changes to Regulation 48. It is important that bodybuilders ensure that they are fitting additional side marker indicators to all vehicles above 9m. The major changes are outlined below:

•  Vehicles in excess of 9m long must have at least 3 flashing amber side markers fitted

•  The lights must flash in sync with the turn signal indicators

•  3 the minimum for each side; you may fit more as required by the client’s specification
