Electric Vehicles Hit Two Major Milestones in Jan 24

Electric Vehicles Hit Two Major Milestones in Jan 24

Britain has hit two significant milestones towards the adoption of electric vehicles; one million battery electric cars and 60,000 electric vans on the road in January.

New SMMT figures released this week show that Britain has now registered over a million battery electric vehicles (BEVs). After 20 years, environmentalists will be pleased at this significant step towards net zero goals for the transport sector.

Experts in the field forecast that BEVs will represent over a fifth of the market in 2024. Assuming the upward trend continues, it’s possible that we will reach our second million just two years from now.

New van registrations totalled 23,962 in January 2024, making an 8.4% rise from January 2023 and the best January for three years. Electric vans saw a massive jump in registrations, rising 19.4% year on year; equivalent to 1,186 registrations in January. Access to the Plug-in Van Grant is thought to be a contributing factor to this growth, assisting businesses with reducing their carbon emissions.

Although this is hopeful news, the uptake of green vehicles needs to grow much faster to meet the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate which requires BEVs to represent 10% of sales in 2024.

The market share is expected to grow from 5.9% to 9.4% across 2024; still falling slightly short of this target.

As many drivers will tell you, worries about infrastructure continue to be the biggest barrier to a greater uptake of BEVs. Investment in the electric grid and public charging infrastructure needs to be a priority, with latest news showing that the Government is falling well short of some of its electric targets including its 2023 motorway services charging points target.
